Why September Is the Best Time to Visit the Aosta Valley | Slow Mountain Retreat in the Italian Alps

And why our September retreat is intentionally a little slower...

Located in north-west Italy, the Aosta Valley is Italy's smallest region, surrounded by some of Europe's highest peaks, including the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso.

Every season has its own magic here...

Winter brings snow-covered peaks and cosy evenings by the fire. Spring fills the alpine meadows with wildflowers, while October transforms the forests into beautiful shades of gold, amber and crimson.

But if someone asked me to choose just one month, my answer would always be September.

After the busy summer holidays, the mountains begin to breathe again. The hiking trails become quieter, the air feels fresher, and the golden afternoon light creates a peaceful atmosphere that reminds us to slow down.

It's my favourite time to be outdoors.

Whether I'm walking through ancient pine forests, following mountain streams or enjoying the views beneath the Matterhorn, September has a gentle rhythm that makes it easy to leave everyday life behind.

One of my favourite places is Chamois, Italy's only village that can only be reached by cable car or on foot.

Perched high above the Matterhorn Valley, with its traditional wooden chalets, flower-filled balconies and peaceful walking paths, it's one of those rare places where life still moves at a gentler pace. Every visit reminds me that happiness isn't always found in doing more—it is often found in noticing more.

September is also harvest season in the Aosta Valley. Local markets are filled with fresh produce, mountain restaurants celebrate seasonal flavours, and vineyards begin preparing for the grape harvest. It's a wonderful time to experience not only the beauty of the mountains but also the warmth and traditions of the local community.

Why Our September Retreat Lasts Seven Days

When I designed our September retreat, I made one decision very intentionally.

I wanted it to last a full seven days.

Not because we wanted to include more activities, but because I believe true rest cannot be rushed.

In today's busy world, many of us spend the first few days of a holiday simply slowing down. Our minds are still thinking about work, family responsibilities and endless to-do lists.

A week gives us something different.

Time to settle.

Time to breathe.

Time to connect with nature, with other women and, perhaps most importantly, with ourselves.

There is no pressure to do everything.

If you enjoy hiking, you'll love exploring beautiful mountain trails, the peaceful forests and charming alpine villages.

If you prefer a slower pace, you might choose to spend the afternoon reading beside the pool, relaxing in the garden with a cup of tea, enjoying a massage or simply sitting quietly with the mountains as your view.

Our yoga sessions, guided walks and workshops are invitations, not obligations.

This is your retreat.

We simply create the space for you to enjoy it in the way that feels right for you.

Because wellbeing isn't about filling every hour with activities.

Sometimes, it's about finally giving yourself permission to do a little less.

As summer gently gives way to autumn, September offers the perfect opportunity to pause, reflect and begin a new season feeling rested, lighter and inspired.

It would be my pleasure to share this special time in the mountains with you.

Warm wishes,

Anita
